Worship Team Leader

Leading the worship team is a sacred responsibility that must begin with prayer. God is the one who works through us.
While we all share the same values, each leader will lead differently. God has gifted each of us uniquely, and we want to lead out of those strengths—not as carbon copies of one another. The goal of this guide is to provide simple direction while allowing you to lead in the way God has wired you.
One of our greatest strengths at Calvary Oxnard is our servant-minded culture and our ability to work together. As a leader, your role is to lead the team well—and that will naturally bless the congregation.
Look for how God has gifted others on your team and help draw that out. Be mindful of people who could step into the worship team with the right invitation and encouragement. As you lead, you help extend and strengthen the healthy culture of our team.
Leading the Team (Practical)
We build culture in how we lead. Here are a few simple ways to do that:
  • Show up early, prepared, and ready to serve
  • Start with prayer
  • Check in with the AV team—they are part of the team and should feel free to communicate
  • Run a line check to ensure all mics and instruments are set correctly
  • Make sure your team (band and vocals) is set up for success
During rehearsal, you’ll need to make judgment calls:
  • Sometimes it’s important to stop and fix a section
  • Other times, avoid getting stuck in the details and keep moving
Lead with awareness, flexibility, and a servant’s heart.
Planning Center (PCO) & Set Building
Planning Center is how we communicate clearly with the team so they can serve confidently.
Set Deadlines:
  • Wednesday services: send email out by Thursday the week before
  • Sunday services: send email out two Fridays before
When building a set:
  • Use a computer when possible for better visibility
  • Use the “Add Song” filter to see when songs were last played
  • Aim for a balance of familiar and newer songs
  • Remember: the team hears songs far more often than the congregation
Be mindful of your team:
  • Choose songs that set your musicians and vocalists up for success
  • Check song notes to see who has led songs previously
Think through the flow of the set:
  • How songs connect musically and thematically
  • Avoid sets that feel disconnected or repetitive
We don’t need to over-coordinate with the teaching theme—God has been faithful to align those over time.
Most importantly, pray and ask God to lead you.

THank you for serving!
